Sarah Learns about Reserved Books

I have a confession to make. I, Sarah Gould, had the Linguistics 311 books out for eight hours. Everyone in said class may now hit me furiously around the head, because it only took me three hours to read them - and those happened to be the last three.

In case you are wondering why I [...]

First Day of Classes

Today was my first day of classes after a looong orientation week. I was so busy last week, with activities every few hours, that being done by noon is crazy! So here’s the run down: Humanities lecture at 9 o’clock sharp on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. My conferences are immediately afterwards.

Today’s lecture, by Walter “Wally” [...]

Mutual Respect: Welcome to Reed

Today was my first full day of Reed orientation. And it’s still going…

I finally met my roommate, Upasana (who’s from Nepal), last night. I now know several of the international students (including kids from Cameroon, Equador, Hong Kong, and Tanzania). There are so many people, and so many names to remember, but I feel so [...]

Hiking in Indian Heaven

I just got back from Indian Heaven, backpacking since Saturday with other new Reedies. It was incredibly fun, and I made many new friends! I’ve found that I become shy in large groups, but with twelve people (including two leaders and one specialist), I really felt part of the group.

The area was beautiful. Huckleberries were [...]

Packing Up and Backing Up

Well, it’s all done. My room is packed up and I’m ready to move it all down to Reed tomorrow. Tomorrow - can you believe it? Unfortunately, I can’t actually unpack until after my backpacking trip. But this time tomorrow night, I’ll be in my dorm room.

Another item on the agenda is backing up my [...]

Drive Test

Well, I had my drive test today. Actually, due to scheduling limitations, I had to wait on standyby. Of course, having been in India for a month and not having practiced parking or backing, I was sure I would fail if I took it today! Max had his test before mine, and passed with an [...]

Riva and the Universal Language

Last night I watched “Loud as a Whisper,” an episode from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Riva, a famous peace-keeper and negotiator, is deaf. He communicates through a chorus of three people who are completely in tune with his thought and emotions. This episode reminded me of another one called “Darmok,” as both addressed the [...]

A Knot Language

Researches have deciphered part of the Inca khipus, knotted strings supposedly used for accounting purposes. The idea of using colored knots as an alphabet for a string language has been floating around my head for years, and it probably originated from hearing about khipu on Nova. So far, the researchers have discovered only one three-knot [...]

Hello world!

Welcome to my new blog! I’ve been very busy this summer, and only just got back from India. Check out my photos on Flickr - more will come as I finish writing descriptions. Hopefully my new domain and my spanking new WordPress blog will inspire me to post more often!

On other news, my family is [...]
