Education
Reed College Portland, OR — Class of 2009
I went to Reed because I wanted a liberal arts education, and I majored in linguistics because it gave me the most flexibility to pursue courses in topics like religion, anthropology, mathematics, and language. My thesis is equally multidisciplinary, discussing bee dancing and social institutions — read it here.
College Year in Athens Athens, Greece — Spring 2008
During my junior year, I spent a semester abroad studying the art and archeology of Ancient Greece and the art and architecture of the Byzantine Empire. This complemented my freshman Humanities course and gave me first-hand experience with ancient and classical design, guided by enthusiastic experts.
NABA Product Design Class Milan, Italy — Jun 2008
To pursue my interest in industrial design, I took this two-week course over the summer. I got to see the shops and museums of Milan, learning about the history and process of design and deconstructing and constructing my own collage “product”.
Work Experience
Graphic Design — AWAZ Voice for Empowerment — Portland, Oregon — Aug-Sep 2009 AWAZ sells fair trade goods from India, and wanted a unique look and message for their business cards, brochures, fliers, and catalogue. I designed their logo and layouts, as well as advising on the copy.
Architectural Assistant — Sebastian Collet Design –- Portland, Oregon –- May-Aug 2009 I am currently aiding in project research, website upkeep, and office work as an apprentice to an architect who focuses on sustainable and community-centric design.
Web Design — Educational Fontware — May 2003
My co-worker Martin Souza and I worked with the client to create a new look for the company’s website that functioned on old browsers but was easier to maintain and looked more professional.
CV-TSC Icon Design — USA Dept. of Navy — Jul 2004
I made custom icons to represent different data sources for a piece of Navy software.
Web Development — Greg Davidson Antiques — Aug 2004
I built an easy-to-use web-based program so that my client could keep his website updated with his latest shop inventory.
Wiki Development and Use-Case Tracking — Fern Digital — Auckland, New Zealand — Jun-Jul 2006
I originally came on to help this POS software and management company transition to a new platform by documenting use cases, but I ended up introducing a wiki documentation system that the multi-national employees could edit anywhere in the world.
Editing — Emma Wasserman — Portland, Oregon — May-Aug 2007
I edited and checked references for my Ancient Christianity professor’s upcoming book, The Death of the Soul in Romans 7.
Cataloguing — Sexism in Advertising — Portland, Oregon — May-Aug 2007
I scanned and catalogued magazine ads for my anthropology professor’s educational image collection and helped transfer previous material to a new database.
Web Design — Greek Nature — Athens, Greece — May 2008
Two of my professors at CYA were avid environmentalists also working for NGOs, and hoped to put together an educational website for our class and for people interested in the Greek environment generally.
Artwork
I have been drawing and doodling as long as I can remember. I most enjoy creating creatures and characters who populate my imaginary worlds.
Web Design
When it comes to web design, I prefer simple and clean pages that are intuitive to use and aesthetically pleasing. I usually hand-code all the HTML and CSS myself, with a little help from PHP or Javascript. Most of my work has been for my own website, which I started in third grade and have expanded and redesigned dozens of times since. I have also work with many clients, of varying levels of tech savvy, to create websites that not only look nice but are easy to maintain.
Photography
I started taking pictures in India when I first got my own camera and haven’t stopped since. My photographs have appeared in several online guides and news sources, owing to my large collection of Creative Commons licensed work on Flickr. I’m an amateur, but I’ve had some of the most beautiful places, people, flora, and fauna on Earth to practice on.
Miscellaneous
Koipod — Oct 2007
I have often dabbled in programming, and this is one of many games and simulations I have created over the years. Koipod was made in Processing, and features a fish that you guide with your pointer to eat green algae.
Reed Vegan Society — Portland, Oregon — Sep 2007
These are some handouts and posters for the Reed Vegan Society. There was no vegetarian organization on campus when I became vegan, so I decided to start one myself and couldn’t resist designing all the advertising.
